Mulvaney’s B&L Restaurant and B&L Next Door is what Sacramento is all about.  It takes the best of Sacramento history and gives it a fresh new, relevant purpose.  The restaurant, courtyard and event space, lined up in a row, are located in the Handle District in the heart of Midtown Sacramento.  The feel of the location is trendy and urban without trying too hard and you won’t be disappointed with this eclectic space; comfortable, fun, relaxed, yet very special.

The restaurant is in a historic former firehouse.  Looking at the front of this imposing brick building gives true appreciation to the former occupant and the architecture of the past.  Notice remnants of the doors for the (much smaller) fire trucks to enter and exit – also the Hook and Ladder plaster detail at the very top of the building .  B&L Next Door was an auto shop in its previous life.  The open bow truss redwood ceiling and concrete floors are all that remain in this delightful space for events. Now there are unique window treatments, art work and trendy designer touches such as the hanging  doors to create division of space.  For a lovely outdoor environment, there is a narrow courtyard between these two buildings which is perfect for a cocktail gathering or smaller wedding.

The real attraction about the location is the food. Sacramento’s foodie power couple Bobbin and Patrick Mulvaney were married at the B&L and Next Door in 2009. They are the owners and the inspiration for this wonderful establishment. Their business, like their wedding, is all about hand-crafted new American Cuisine and great service.  The menus change frequently to take advantage of the best, fresh and local produce; we love Patrick’s common comment, “whatever comes in the front door goes on your plate.”  The style of the cuisine is much like the physical space.  Patrick often takes something old or traditional and gives it a fresh and relevant life. For both the venue and the food, the emphasis is on quality and keeping current with the times and what the people want.

Vixen Kendra suggests that you try the Pulled Mozzarella and Heirloom Tomato appetizer from the restaurant menu and the B&L Potato and Spring Garlic Agnolotti when you book your event Next Door!
