A Wedding Ceremony on the California State Capitol Park Grounds ~ it’s free!!
Northern California people, and specifically those in the Sacramento Valley region, might be familiar with the 40 acre Capitol Park. Did you know that a couple can marry in this majestic, beautiful park – at no charge?!! This historic park was first established more than 100 years ago and has trees that are from all over the world. The shade canopy in many spots is refreshing and perfect to hold a wedding ceremony. Flower beds, walkways, resting benches and interesting memorials are lovely and great for your out-of-town guests to relax and learn some factoids.
Below is a map of the park, with numbered plots as reference; walk the grounds and decide for yourself. One of the favorite sections is #1, the International World Peace Rose Garden. With arches, a fountain and blooming colorful roses (in season) it’s beautiful! Across the walkway in Section 5 is the awesome cactus garden (cool photo ops), and Section 33 has a smaller rose garden with a nice collection of shade trees. Looking for the stately Capitol to be your backdrop? You can marry on the historic steps! Very cool.
A permit, issued by the California Highway Patrol, is required to reserve your desired section. There is no cost for obtaining a permit and permits will be processed on a first-come first-serve basis. The CHP does not provide any equipment for the events (PA System, Stage, chairs, etc.). It’s easy to work through a professional rental company for a “timed delivery/teardown” of chairs. One security person should be designated and provided by the permit holder, at their expense, for each fifty (50) persons expected to be in attendance. Processing permits generally takes 3-5+ business days. To complete an application, click here .
